Sebastian
County, named after former Judge and State Senator William K. Sebastian,
was carved out of three adjacent counties in 1851. In a bitter contest
that lasted 23 years, the location of the county seat of government
flipped flopped between the county’s primary cities of Fort Smith
and Greenwood. It took a provision inserted in the US Constitution
to settle the matter. Since then, Sebastian County has had two judicial
districts, the upper district in Fort Smith and the lower district
in Greenwood, both under one general organization.
With an area of only 536 square
miles, Sebastian County
is one of the smallest counties in Arkansas. Yet, it is the fourth
most populated county in the State. The City of Fort Smith accounts
for roughly 70 percent of the County’s population, and Greenwood,
six percent. Another nine percent of the residents of Sebastian
County reside in the communities of Barling, Bonanza, Central
City, Hackett, Hartford, Huntington, Lavaca,
City of Mansfield,
and Midland.
